Environmental Policy

Life after Cancer brings people together who have finished cancer treatment to form support groups, with an aim to increase their physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

​

At Life after Cancer, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and integrating sustainability into the way we work. We prioritise digital-first processes, make mindful decisions when planning events, and aim to source goods and services responsibly wherever possible.

This commitment is part of our wider organisational values and is reviewed annually to support continuous improvement.

​

We aim to comply, where applicable, with all relevant UK environmental legislation and take guidance from recognised frameworks such as ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) and the UK Government’s Net Zero strategy.

While we are a small organisation, we are committed to reducing waste, energy use, and our overall environmental footprint over time.

This environmental policy outlines the measures that Life after Cancer will take to embed sustainability into how we function as a business. 

 

The Purpose of this Policy:

  • making environmentally conscious procurement decisions

Our Environmental Objectives

We aim to:

  • minimise the environmental impact of our activities wherever reasonably practicable

  • reduce waste generation and increase recycling and reuse

  • consider environmental impact in all significant operational decisions

  • select suppliers and services that demonstrate responsible environmental practices

  • ensure team members understand and support our environmental commitments

  • review and improve our environmental practices annually

 

Actions We Take​

To support these objectives, Life after Cancer will:

  • Prioritise Digital-first working - We use digital systems wherever possible to reduce paper use, printing, and physical storage requirements.

  • Prioritise Remote and virtual delivery - Where appropriate, we deliver meetings, workshops, and support sessions online to reduce travel-related emissions.

Events and venue selection - When organising in-person events, we aim to:

  • choose venues with clear sustainability practices where possible

  • consider recycling facilities, energy efficiency, and environmental commitments

  • encourage low-impact catering options where relevant

  • support local sourcing where practical

Procurement and suppliers - We aim to work with suppliers who demonstrate environmental responsibility, including:

  • reduced packaging and waste practices

  • sustainable sourcing policies

  • commitment to energy efficiency or carbon reduction

Travel and attendance - We encourage:

  • use of public transport, walking, or car sharing where appropriate

  • reduced unnecessary travel where digital alternatives are suitable

Waste reduction - We aim to:

  • reduce reliance on printed materials

  • use recyclable or reusable materials where printing is required

  • minimise waste sent to landfill wherever possible

Communications and materials - We prioritise digital communications for:

  • newsletters

  • event materials

  • resources and guides

Printed materials are only used where necessary and are sourced responsibly where possible.

Responsibility and awareness​

We ensure that staff, contractors, and volunteers (where applicable) are aware of this policy and are encouraged to integrate environmental considerations into their work.

Responsibility for environmental practices sits with the organisation as a whole, supported by leadership oversight.

Monitoring and improvement

Where appropriate, we will set informal annual objectives relating to environmental improvement, including:

  • reducing waste

  • improving digital efficiency

  • increasing sustainable supplier use

  • reducing avoidable travel impact

We will review this policy annually to ensure it remains relevant, effective, and aligned with evolving environmental expectations and legislation.
